New Audi A8 to get hybrid drivetrains and autonomous tech

Audi has revealed details of its upcoming flagship A8 saloon. Expected to be revealed in Spain next month, this is the car that will take the fight to the upcoming tech-filled S-Class, as well as BMW’s latest 7 Series.

The upcoming A8 is set to be one of the most advanced Audis ever.

The new model has been kept tightly under wraps, so we haven’t seen any official pictures yet. However, thanks to Audi’s conservative design policy, we imagine it’ll look largely similar to the current model.

Inside, it’ll be business as usual for Audi, that is known for making some exquisite interiors. Thanks to this new hybrid tech, Audi claims comfort will be aided by a coasting mode that allows the car to remain silent up to 99mph.

Every version of the new A8 will feature mild hybrid technology, made up of a sophisticated 48V system that Audi claims will enhance performance regardless of fuel type.

Hybrid drivetrains will feature throughout the range.

Then there is the lithium-ion battery in the luggage compartment to act as the energy accumulator for the MHEV (mild hybrid electric vehicle) with a 10 Ah charge carrier capacity and a 48V system.

To keep up with the upcoming S-Class’ impressive tech-fest, the A8 will also be capable of Level 3 autonomy. That means it’ll be able to drive largely by itself on motorways and dual carriageways.

We've seen autonomous tech on the current A8, but not in production form.

Obviously the driver will still be in control, and if you’re considering a nap then you shouldn’t; the A8 will feature eye-monitoring technology, to make sure you’re alert even when in autonomous mode.

We should learn much more about this luxury saloon when it’s revealed next month, with deliveries expected to begin by the end of the year. In the meantime, you can check out lease deals on current Audi’s here.
